There are many people involved in the life of the alcoholic. So often the alcoholic has the selfish attitude of "my drinking only affects me", but nothing could be further from the truth. Family, friends, employer, coworkers, neighbors and the community are all affected by alcoholism not just the alcoholic. They end up spending time covering up for them, punishing them, taking responsibility for them, trying to "fix" them. The alcohol really needs to take a step back and take a look at all the damage they are creating by their drinking, but this often times is very hard to do until they can get themselves sober. Treatment is the ideal way for someone to get sober if they have tired and failed to do it on their own. There are very successful drug rehabs all over the country and even the world. When the alcoholic can stop the drinking and finally take a look at themselves and the world around them with an entirely new prospective they will usually realize how many they have affected with their alcohol addiction.
