Risk factors that we do have control over but often don't realize it. PDF Print E-mail
Here are some of some of the risk factors for alcohol abuse that people can change but often times do not recognize.  Take your environment, if you live where people drink a lot and heavy drinking is accepted as part of life, or where alcohol is easy to get you are more likely to drink.  Use of other substances, if you abuse other substances, such as tobacco, illegal drugs or prescription drugs you are more likely to abuse alcohol.  Friends, the people that you hang around with may influence you to drink by urging you to drink when you're around them.  Mental health, with depression or anxiety disorder it is common to use alcohol to ease the pain and stress of these conditions.  Problems with others, you are more likely to turn to alcohol when you are having problems with family or friends.  No purpose or satisfaction, if you have no activities that give you a sense of purpose, you are more likely to drink.  Just because you have risk factors for becoming an alcoholic doesn't mean that you'll become one.  A person with many risk factors may never develop alcoholism and a person with no risk factors can become an alcoholic.  You can learn new and better ways of dealing with the risk factors that cause you to drink at drug rehab.  Why dabble with the chance of becoming an alcoholic when you can obtain the tool that are needed for you to stop drinking alcohol with treatment.
