Alcoholism is caused by prolonged, heavy use of alcohol which leads to addiction.  When someone with prolonged, heavy use tries to quit drinking they are faced with withdrawal symptoms such as tremors, severe anxiety, hallucinations and convulsions.  The alcoholic usually also has poor nutrition because no thought is give to eating food just drinking more alcohol.  The poor nutrition along with consuming large quantities of alcohol can lead to permanent damage to the liver and brain.  Many alcoholics become severely impaired both physically and mentally as years go by.  If drinking is stopped before too much damage has been done to the body the body can repair some of the damage that has been done and a person can live a normal life.  The hope for beating the alcohol addiction comes with treatment of the alcoholism at a drug rehab.
